Trigger Point Injections at Twins Chiropractic and Physical Medicine

Man holding neck in painDid you know that about 10% of the U.S. population suffers with some form of chronic pain?

If you are a part of that percentage, you know firsthand just how debilitating and defeating the symptoms may be. You merely adjust and unfortunately learn to live in your “new norm”-but what if there was a way for you to diminish your symptoms and essentially live pain free without invasive surgery or daily medication? Would you try it?

Trigger Point Injections, also known as TPI, are a non-invasive form of treatment that is generally pain free and can be preformed within 15-20 minutes in our office.

What is a Trigger Point?

A Trigger Point is a knotted or tight area of the muscle that can be felt under the skin and when pressure is applied to the area pain is “triggered” to another area of the body. There are two trigger point classifications-active and latent. Active trigger points cause pain at rest and are tender to touch and produce pain, whereas latent trigger points do not cause random pain but may restrict movement and cause muscle weakness. An evaluation from our practice will help determine your problem areas and future injections.

The Trigger Point Injection contains medication that is designed to breakdown the pain cycle. The injection is made up of various medications-single local anesthetic, corticosteroid, or a combination of local anesthetics and corticosteroid.

With a combination of anesthetics and corticosteroid, the injection helps block pain receptors in the nerves which surround the muscle. Therefore, reducing the pain signals transmitted to the brain and reduce inflammation and swelling within the nerves. With muscles relaxed, this improves blood flow which promotes healing.

What Can it Help?

Trigger Point Injections were found to successfully treat many muscle groups, especially in the neck, arms, low back and legs. Patients have also reported improvements with headaches, migraines, fibromyalgia, chronic pain syndrome and sciatica pain. An evaluation with our medical providers can determine if you are a candidate for trigger point injections based on your symptoms.
